EXCITING CHASE.
POLICE FIRE ON SUSPECT.
MELBOURNE STREET INCIDENT,
An exciting chase, resulting in the arrest of Arthur Gollis, a groom, of Fitzrov, took place through tho streets of Collingwood, Melbourne, on the night of Saturday, August 30. Collis made such determined efforts to escape after having been captured once that Constable Thomas was forced to fire on him.
Shortly after nine o'clock in the morning, the police at Collingwood wero called to a nursing home, near which, it was alleged, a man was annoying residents. Constables Thomas and Goulding arrived in a motor-car, and saw Collis, who ran off. He made down a street, vaulted a high fence, and burst through the door of a house. Running through the houso he jumped two more fences, and then attempted to board a moving electric tram. Failing in this, he attempted to burst into another house, but Constable Thomas caught him.
While being taken to the police station in a motor-car, Collis leapt out and ran off again. Constable Thomas fired a shot over the fugitive's head, and Collis tripped and fell. The constables grappled with him, and in spite of his vigorous struggles he was handcuffed. Collis was later charged with having been in possession of articles suspected of having been stolen. ,
