NEWMARKET WORKSHOPS.

SUBDIVISION OF SITE. A TEMPORARY SCHEME. Plans for the temporary subdivision and leasing by the Railway Department of the back portion of the Newmarket workshops site for industrial purposes were considered by the City Council" last evening. It was decided to make further inquiries, the question of storing petrol oil the Site having been raised. The Town-planning Committee reported that it had received 'an application on behalf of J. C. Spedding, Limited, lessee of part of the property, for permission to remove two sheds, purchased from the Railway Department, to other positions. The district railway engineer, in a letter, stated that the permanent subdivision of the area had not yet been made. Its proper roading would bo an expensive matter, and the work could not be considered for many years. In order that the land should not remain idle, the department had offered eight lots for temporary lease for terms of 10 years, and four of them had been taken.

The lots fronted a private road, which would bo maintained by the department. The latter, although exempt from the provisions of the Town-planning Act, wished to fall in with the wishes of the local town-planning authority in the final subdivision of the site. The engineer trusted that thero would be 110 difficulty in arranging permits for the erection of buildings desired by the lessees. The city engineer reported that with regard to the application of J. C. Spedding, Limited, the inspector of dangerous goods informed him that ho did not favour the storage of petrol 011 the site. The Town-planning Commit tee recommended that permits be issued for the erection of temporary buildings on that portion of the site east of the temporary road, provided the lessees entered into bonds of 50 per cent, of the value of the buildings for the removal of such buildings in five years' time and thereafter at the pleasure of the council. In reply to a question, the city engineer stated that petrol iu drums was being stored on the site at present. The report was referred back to the committee for further consideration.
