HIRE-PURCHASE SYSTEM.

"BECOMING A REAL MENACE"

CRITICISM AT MORRINSVILLE. [BY TELEGRATH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] MORRINSVILLE, Wednesday. "Thcro is no doubt that the hire-pur-chaso system is getting a real menaco to the mercantile community," said the chairman of the Morrinsvillo Chamber of Commerce, Mr. E. McGregor, at a meeting of the chamber. "Nearly everything is being sold on the hire-purchase system," he continued, "and it is next to impossible to know whether a man owns a thing or not. There is at present no means of ascertaining whether a man owns an article, or is only hiring it. "Nearly every week tho Governor-Gcn-eral-in-Council adds to the list of articles that may bo bought on timo payment. People get theso things, which are luxuries, on timo paymont, arid then they have to keep up the payments or lose the luxuries, and they neglect the butcher and the baker."

Mr. McGregor was in favour of having hire-purchase agreements registered, as he considered this would help to draw attention to the fact that this is an economic problem which has to bo tackled sooner or later.
