QUIET CONDITIONS CONTINUE THE CURRENT QUOTATIONS. s Although a week of spring-like weather has been - experienced no benefit has been observed in stock values; indeed, apart from the ordinary operations of butchers very little interest, is being displayed. "With the great uncertainty that exists concerning the prospects of ail branches, enthusiasm is hardly to La expected, but certainly our sheep products, will require to bo very unpopular abroad, if to-day's purchasing values must still be considered unprofitable. In the dairy section some difficulty is being found in procuring a sufficient supply of cattle at profit. It is for these that tho demand exists and for good quality animals gonerous competition exists. Conditions as they affect the individual sections are as follows: BEEF. Last week's quotations have not been maintained. At the Central yards 011 Tuesday much lower values ruled for both ox and cow beef and in a number of instances failure to effect a transfer was re corded, Tiierq is no immediate sign oj shortage and it seem* improbable that we will reach last winter's values. Prime os equalled up to 355: ordinary, -16s: prime heifer and young cow. 35s to 375; ordinary cow, 30s (0 325. • ~ MUTTON. A much smaller yarding that usual was penned at tho Central sale and wethers in some instances were slightly firmer. The best of these reached 30s, with from 27s to 28s for lighter sheep. I'ot owes made to 19s and plainer quality from 15s; forward owes. 8s to 9s 9d. Best hoggets drew competition up to 22s Gd; lighter, weights from 17s Gd. STORE CATTLE. The offerings in this section are extremely small. Tho demand also seems to have slackened; at least there is not the koenness to purchase that existed a few weeks ago. Good Jersey heifers are saleable ahd there seems every prospoct of this buoyancy continuing through the. spring months. Fair supplies of empty cows still corno fqrwurd, but these are almost entirely absorbed by the boning companies. Forward steers sell up to £9 10s; 3-year steers, from £7 10s to £8 10s; 2-year beat, up to ;S7; medium quality. £0 to £6 10s; yearlings, best, up to £4 lus; second quality, from £3 10s; forward cows, up to £5 10s; smaller, from £3 to £4 ss; store cows, up to £4 10s; Jersey heifers (good quality), up to £5 10s; medium, £4 to £4 10s; small, £2 10s to £3 ss. STORE SHEEP. • Conditions are deplorable from a. vendor's point of view and considerable loss must have been experienced by many. Lambing being now fairly general, owes in this state are practically off the market. Empty ewes are worth from 7s to Ps; 4-too(li wethers make from 19s to 21s; best lambs, up to 15s Gd; medium, from lis to 13? Gd: small, from Ss 1o 10s. DAIRY'CATTLE. For early calving animals the market continues strong, and should remain so for some months to come. Unless tho wastage from dairy herds can be lessened it seems safe to assort that a greater number of replacements can bo absorbed than we have available this season, but some better regulation of calving dates seems desirable. Best cows are wo,rth up to £l4; medium quality. £lO to £l2; backward, £7 30s to £8 10s; heifers, up to £l3 for good quality: medium, £lO to £11; backward. £7 10.s to £8 3s. PIGS. Fat pigs are still short in supply but better competition has been offered. Baconers are selling up to £3 10s; lighter weights, £2 15s to £3; best, porkers, £2! to £2 10s; lighter weights, from 355.
