EFFICIENCY AND SERVICE. VIEW OF MANUFACTURERS. That efficiency and service must be commensurate with the increased protection given to New Zealand industries is the attitude of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association, according to the president, Mr. G, Finn. The latest proposals of the Government to raise the timber duties were taken to illustrate the point. "There is no doubt that the timber people have been given a substantial protection, and it is up to them now to give service," Mr. Finn said yesterday. As president of tlie Manufacturers' Association, he intended to make representations on this matter to the Dominion Federated Sawmillers' Association.

Jt was, generally speaking, more difficult io obtain supplies of a New Zealand timber than of an imported kind. Stocks of the latter had to be kept on hand owing to the time required to secure replacements from overseas", but inquirers for seasoned New .Zealand woods too often found that a supply was not available at the moment. This position did not apply only to timber, of course. Footwear provided another example. A customer requiring New Zealand-made boots was likely to find that the shop contained a much fuller range of imported lines than of those he wished to inspect. The development of the Dominion's secondary industries called for a removal, as far as possible, of such disabilities as this. "The volume of business has, in some cases, had a rather disheartening effect in the past, but service must be given iu order to get volume," Mr. Finn added.
