SUPERIORITY OF TOXEUMA.

NANCY LEE IN SECOND PLACE. [BY TELE6RAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Tho good field of 20 paraded for the Winter Cup, Tourist, Marjoram and Arch Arrow being the only withdrawals. Speculation was well distributed, Staghunter finishing up a belter favourite by 50 tickets than Best Friend, who carried 200 tickets more than Toxeuma.

After a slight delay at tho start the .field was despatched on good terms, Pride and Full Feather faring tho worst. When tho field had gone a furlong the most prominent vvcro Havering, Arikinui, Staghunter, Toxeuma, Rascal and Starshootor. These wore in a bunch at tho far turn, but rounding the homo bend Nancy Leo and Starshooter showed out from Rascal, Ranelagli, Toxeuma and Staghunter. Nancy Leo was first into tho straight, slightly in front of Starshooter, Toxeuma, Ranelagh, Black Mint and Havering, but inside the distance Toxeuma had • taken charge and soon placed the issue beyond all doubt, going on to win without boing called on to do his best by three lengths from Nancy Lee, who stuck to her task gamely, but had no chance with the winner. Ranelagh was in third placo nearing the post, but Havering, who lost a favourable position in tho middle stages, came with a lato run to beat him by two lengths. Taboo, Blimp, Topcro, Starshooter, Black Mint, Smithereens and Tcri were tho next to finish.

GOOD EFFORT BY ON TOP. FAVOURITE BEATEN. Grattus, Lord Thomond and Charmeuso were withdrawn from the Avonhead Handicap, for which Hunting Call was the best supported in an extensive pool. The early leaders were Portray. Grand Aero and On Top, and rounding tho far turn, Portray and Grand Aero wcro abreast in front o£ Desert Song, On Top and Hunting Call. The leading pair held their place to tho straight entrance, whero Grand Acre rotired and On Top tackled Portray, with Desert Song and Bulolo in close attendance. On Top had the race won inside tho distance, and passed tho post two lengths ahead of Portray, who withstood a challenge by Desert Song to beat hiin a length. Hunting Call was close up next, and then with a gap camo Compris, High Gear, Bulolo and Dumblane. WEIGHT-CARRYING FEAT. TOXEUMA'S NEW IRECORD. FIRST 1 1 st. CUP WINNER. A fresh weight-carrying record was established by Toxeuma in winning the Winter Cup with 11.5. She has been a.versatile performer, having won' on the flat, over hurdles and bver country. HEAVY STATE OF TRACKS.

[BY TELEORArn.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAWERA, Tuesday. No galloping was dono on tho Hawera tracks this morning owing to tbo heavy state of the grass tracks. J. Brown sent Biflcx and Whirl twico round on the sand at half-paco. Son o' Mino was allotted a similar task. Silver Mine strode along on tho snnd a couple of times at half to three-quarter paco. Mendip went, twico round at a good strong half-pace. Gowan Lea did similar work. Mount Shannon worked on tho sand at' half-paco and then went onco round tho inside oval. : V The Hunting Song—Whakatane and Arausis —Froya fillies worked twico round on tho two-year-old tracks at from a canter to a steady half-paco. Copey and Orazono were trotted and cantored in tl;o inside oval.

Bright Glow was allowed to bowl along on tho sand at half-pace. So were Pikimai and Maidos, two hunters engaged at the Taranaki meeting. Miss Sheff, who has an engagement at the Taranaki Hunt meeting, was worked on tho sand and was allowed to bowl along at a good half-paco. This filly shows a lot of pace. Prince Desmond worked on tho sand and wont nicely over two rounds at half-paco. Banbridgo bowled along at halfpaco.. Gasnappor, looking very robust, worked on tho sand. Messrs. Knoebone and §rown havo retnrhed Bonogno to his owner. Mr. H. Vino, who will suporviao his training operations. M. Conway has an addition to his-largo team in a half-brother to Bon Ever by Cynic. Bon Ever has rejoined Conway's team. W, Pino had his team out doing useful exercises. They comprised Ngawhino, Homewood, Tontcall and Calamino. Goblin Market went a round on the sand at half-pace.
