HIGH-CLASS JUMPING.

iy , v o •« DISPLAY IN STEEPLECHASE.

WINNER'S FINE EFFORT.

A' POPULAR VICTORY*

[BY TELEGRAM.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday

lho withdrawal of Lord Ranald from Iho Grand National Steeplechaso caused some disappointment, but the' inclusion of the other two doubtful starters, Omeo and Mat.u, lent much interest to the .contest. In ft good betting raco Aurora Borealis was elected firqt choice, carrying close on 600 tickets, more than Matu, with a gap of only 50''-tickets to Corneroff. Iho result was a triumph'for the favourite, who gave a faultless display throughout. Sho was kept well away from tho leaders until tho kennels double was crossed in the final circuit, where sho ran up to Corneroff and passed the latter going to tho far sod wall, with Omeo close up and Snowfall and Matu commencing to tail off. Aurora Borealis jumped well clear of Corneroff at tli© top brush and had a two lengths' lead at tho last fence, which she cleared in the best Btyle, and went on to win with, ease by five lengths from Corneroff, with Omeo four lengths back and two lengths in front of Snowfall. Tho only other horse to finish was Matu, who was some 50 yards in the roar.

Kapuna acted as pacemaker after half-a-milo had been covered and was in front when he fell at tho top brush, which also brought down Wharncliffo, then a long way in tho rear. Valves showed a bold front in leading over tho first three fences, but lost his place along the back and was eliminated at the carriage jiaddocks brush, Except for these threo mistakes the jumping of all tho candidStes was high class, tho three placed horses especially deserving special mention. Tho win of tho favourilo was naturally of tho popular order and tho crowd gave her an enthusiastic reception on returning. Her rider, H. Dulieu, only accepted tho mount on tho morning of tho raco, and ho thus followed up his success in tho Wellington Steeplechase, in which Mangani beat to-day' 3 winner on tho post. Corneroff was responsible for a high, grado effort and when ho shot to tho front a milo from homo his prospects looked bright, but the more experienced winner had him in trouble over the -business states. Omeo was in charge for half-a-milo after Kapuna fell but was in distress when ,the v back stretch 'was tackled. Snowfall looked a likely contender going to the far turn tho last time but drifted back after crossing tho sod wall at tho,-fivo furlong post. Matu - also showed promiso passing tho standa in the homo circuit, but a bad jump at tho milo sod wall steadied him up and ho gradually rotircd from tho tusslo. Kapuna was going well when he fell and it would have been interesting for him to have remained in. Ho completed the journey on tho flat and actually finished in front of the winner.

AN INTERESTING FINISH.

LLYN DHU BEATS PARIS.

Contrary to tho traincr'g. assurance on Monday, Llyn Dhu was produced in the Trial Hurdlo Race and was made a good favourite. He tailed tho field over the first half-mile, but gradually moved up and wa-s close in behind the: leaders at the far turn. Deluge, who had acted as pacemaker from the start, was in charge at this stage and led round the home turn and into tho straight from Gay Fashion, Llyn Dhu. Paris and Zippor.

Theao were well bunched at the'last fence; but once over, Llyn Dhu forged -to -the front and ,in an interesting \ietaytd on to beat Paris by half a length,.-' with Gay Fashion a" similar , distance away. Delugo weakened in the run home and'was four lengths back. Rigoletto was prominent for a while, but soon retired through slow jumping and finished well in. the rear. The remaining starter, Exide, struck the hurdle at the mile post when in last position and dislodged his rider.

WEST DOME'S EASY WIN. KING'S JEST NOT PLACED. King's Jest' was considered a much botter proposition than Fine Acre and West Dome for the Jumpers' Flat Race, but was never in the firing-line and finished well back from the placed division. The race was won from end to end by West Dome, who led along the back and round the far turn from Shipshape, Troilus, Aberfeldy, Membo and King's Jest. Aberfeldy moved up into second place entering the straight and threw out a challenge, but West Dome was not at all troubled to beat him easing up by two lengths, Membo was a length and a-half away clear of Shipshape, King's Jest and Fine Acre, with Troilus and Carinthia in the'rear. STRONG FINISH BY RASOULI. AIR LADDIE BEATS CHARMEUSE. The Cashmere Plate was productive of some fairly even betting, only .400 ticket* covering the gap between Cbarmouee and the fourth choice, Rasouli. The big field got away on good terms, and when the course proper was reached Painkiller, Gustavo and Cliarmeuse were in lino in front, with Air Laddie, Rasouli and Kakara in close attendance. Painkiller was done with at the distance, and Charmouso, Gustavo and Air Laddio were disputing the lead when Rasouli shot to the front on the outside. Ho drew away in the final run and won in a comfortable manner by two lengths from Air Laddie, who repeated his last year's placing by finishing on better than tlio favourite to beat her by a similar margin. Kakara was well clear next, and was followed by Miss Bradbury, Swiftray, Custavo, Painkiller and Golden Pennant, with lliri last.

RADJAC'S LONG LEAD.

WEAK OPPOSITION OUTCLASSED. Tho Enfield Steeplechase was •an easy proposition for the odds-on favourite, Radiac, who outclassed tho weak opposition throughout and won in an effortless manner, laramoa and Diana's Lad were tho early loaders, but the latter fell nt tho first of .the stand double, and Taramoa blundered badly. Radiac had charge going out of the straight, but Taramoa again went to tho front, but only temporarily, as .Radiao outjumped him at tho back fences. When the top brush was reached Radiao was some ton lengths in front of Taramoa, with a gap to "Double Soult, who fell at the fcnco, and Kaikahu and Parader tailing off. Radiac. then hacl tho raco at his mercy, and actually cantered homo a winner by six lengths from Tarnmoa, • .Kaikahu struggled on into third place, ten lengths back, with Parader a long way in th» rear.

DUEL OVER A MILE. DECISION FOR BAHRINGTON. The field for tho Hunters' Hurdlo Raco was reduced to seven runners by tho withdrawals of West Dome and Thurnia. Airforcp was hi keen demand, but bo ran disappointingly, and never looked liko a winner, Star Stranger 11. and Barrington had tho raco to themselves over tho last mile, the former leading into tho straight with a slight advantage from Barrington. Barrington was on terms with Star Stranger 11. negotiating tho last foncu, and in a sustained finish gradually gained tho ascendancy to beat her .by half a length. Gold Mint finished tho best of tho remainder to gain third money, 10 lengths away, a length in front of I'eteretto and Airfcrf|j together. Akbar was woll back, and Bladon, who baulked at tho six-furlong post, brought up tho rear.
