DISTRESS IN WINTER.

Sir,—l rend with interest, and regret, the article in Saturday's Herald under tho above heading, and would be pleased to be allowed to suggest that for the next few weeks, in order to relieve distress, every person working con tribute threepence, by allowing employers to deduct same from their pay envelope. An appeal could bo posted up in a conspicuous place in every shop, workshop, office, etc. I am a working man myself, and consider myself extremely lucky in being able to maintain a home and feed my littlo ones. There is an old saying that many can help one, while one cannot help many. It is only to tide theso sufferers over the few remaining winter weeks of wet and cold that I earnestly appeal to sympathetic employers to start the ball rolling by posting up the above notice. This threepenny piece from each worker would bring in approximately £1250 weekly. There are hundreds to-day who would willingly give double if only they were working. This should not be looked upon as a charity, but merely as a temporary helping hand from one worker to another, man to man, mate to mate. Just a lift over the stile. H. 8.8.
