AMOUNT OF £1 53,000 SINCE 1913

[BY TELECIUrn.—-OWN COTU'.ES PONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Monday.

Distributions amounting to £14,500 among charitable and educational institutions were authorised at tho annual meeting or tho governors of the 'J'. G. Macarthy Trust to-day. In tho 17 years of its existence, tho trust has distributed £153,027. The first allocation of £2550 was made in 1913, and since that year almost overy allocation has exceeded its predecessor. A sum of £15,000 was distributed last year. Tho Governor-General, chairman of the board of governors, presided at the meeting. Tho other members of tho board arc tho Primo Minister, the Mayor of Wellington and Archbishop Redwood. Tho assets of the estate aro held by the Public Trustee, who is chairman of an advisory committee of leading Wellington citizens.

His Excellency said that he would like to take the opportunity of congratulating tho provincial district of Wellington on the existence of such a valuable trust, and also on tho skill, prudence apd wise discrimination that had been displayed in its administration by tho Public Trustee. Ho also desired to place on record the appreciation of the board of the labours of tho Public Trustee and the advisory committee in connection with tho preparation of the recommendations, and the thanks of tho hoard for the valuable assistance which had been rendered.

Increase in Taxation. The Public Trustee's report stated that the year's operations had been successful. Although tho amount available for distribution was smaller than in the previous year, this was not duo to deterioration of the estate assets or a permanent decline in their earning power. A heavy increase in national and municipal taxation had been responsible for additional charges against tho revenue of the estate. The gross revenue for tho year exceeded that for the previous year. The full incoino of the estate would not be available for charitable and educational purposes, until the devolution 'Ol certain special trusts and the termination of certain life interests under tho will. At prcscit half of tho residuary income of the estate was distributable among tho eligible institutions and objects. Following tho usual procedure, the Public Trustee inserted advertisements in the newspapers inviting applications for grants, the report added.
