AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.

SEVERAL LIVELY CONTESTS,

SEVEN NEW TITLE-HOLDERS. The semi-finals and finals of the Auckland provincial amateur boxing championships were decided at the Town Hall last evening. The tournament, which was conducted under the control of tho Northern Boxing Association, attracted a large attendance. The high standard set in the eliminating bouts was well maintained. P. McCarthnv, tho heavy-weight champion, was tho only one to retain his title.

Tho feather-weight bout between R. Purdio and E. Murtitt was quite a surprise. The, latter fought tho champion all the way, scoring well with swings to the head. Pnrdic only won in the final round by calling up hie superior knowledge of ringcraft. Murfitt rercivcd a tremendous ovation from the audience, which did not agree with the judge's decision in favour of Purdie.

Clifford and Painter gave a good, fast display for heavy-weights. A special medal was awarded to W. Hogg for his showing in both tho welter and middle-weight classes. Messrs. R. Meale and X. McLean were the referees. The champions for 1930 arc as follows : Fly-weight.—F. Bruno. Bantam-weight.—J. McLaughlin. Feather-weight.—R. Pnrdic. Light-weight.—li. B. Martin. Welter-weight.—D. Cleverley. Middle-weight.—lt. Xeal. Light-heavv-weight. —R. P. Cowan. Heavy-weight. —■ P. McCinthriey (holder). Following are the results:--FLY-WEIGHT CLASS, Tst. 101b, Semi-final.- —F. Bruno, 7st. GH>., beat S. Tilton, 7st. 81b. Bruno started aggressively, landing with a fast right swing to the head. Til lon's straight left scored in the second, but. Kruno wed both hands t.i the head in tho final to win comfortably.

Final.—F. Bruno, 7st. 61b.. beat 0. Grimmcrs, 7st. sJlb. Starting in a flurry of fists a sharp pace was maintained throughout. Fast exchanges at short range made this a very interesting and willing match. BANTAM-WEIGHT CLASS: Bst. 21b. Final.—,T. McLaughlin, 7st. 1241b., beat A Porteous, Bst. Alb. Port'eous worked a good right to the body in a bright opening round. McLaughlin's left lead did good work throughout. Tho final session was fast, with McLaughlin scoring well with straight hits to win in a good bout. FEATHER-WEIGHT CLASS: 9st. Semi-final.—R. Purdie, Bst. 1141b., beat E. Murfitt, Bst. 13H). Mnrfitt was tho aggressor in the first round, landing well with left and right, swings to the champion's head. .Purdie, however, was placing his blows with confidence. Murfitt was countering Purdie's leads well in the second and was even on points. Purdie boxed his opponent to win on the last round. W. ITogg, Bst 841b, beat L. Bailey, Bst The opening stages were even with Hogg doing the better at short range, .fust as tho gong went at tho end of the second round Ilogg suddenly dropped after having been accidentally butted. He came out unsteadily, but weathered to win by clever hitting. Final. —R. Purdie, Ost 1141b, knocked out W. Hogg, Ost Bjlb. A nice precision was shown by both, who displayed a really good knowledge. A short right followed by a left hook to the jaw put Hogg down for right in tho second and when ho was sent down again the referee awarded the fight to Purdie. LIGIIT-WEIGIIT CLASS: tost. Semi-final.—F. Lindesay, Ost beat J. Brent nail, 9st 101b. Both concentrated on tho body in the first and on thu head in tho second. Lindesay kept his opponent away with his left. Brentnail worked hard in the third but could not overtake his opponent. R. 1!. Martin. Ost 1.31b,. beat M. A. Pcryer, Ost 101b. In an even opening round the pair worked to the head. Pcryer was the aggressor in the second but Martin steadied him with hard rights to tho heart, wliilo Perver gathered somo useful points with his left to the face. The final round was hard with both scoring with rights. Martin, however, gained the deciding points.

Final.—B. B. Martin, 9st, 13lb, beat F. Lindesay, 9st 13ylb. This was fought at a smart clip, Lindesay rushing Martin to the ropes and indulging in hard rallies in which Martin did better work. Lindesay went down for seven in the second round from a series of rights to tlie head. Martin's right connected well to tho body in a strong final round.

WELTER-WEIGHT CLASS: 10st. 91b. Semi-final.—D. Cleverly, JOst 3i,lb. beat W. Jlogg, lOst 61b. Loth fought with a will throughout at close rango with a. very fast and hard final round. It wan a close decision.

C. McKnight, lOst 51b, beat A. Crook, 9st This was a good bout with some heavy exchanges. McKnight's right scored well to head and body. Crook's rangy left scored well in tho second but the. winner countered eflicientlv.

Final. —D. Cleverley, lOst 5,Ub, bent C. McKnight, lOst sib. Both liavo pronounced weaving styles which precluded a great deal of soliil hitting. Blood from a cut ;n McKnight's head caused him trouble in the. second round. McKnight was landing more cleanly, but the decision might have gone either wnv.

MIDDLE-WEIGHT CLASS: list. 4b. Semi-final.—ll. Neal, list. 41b., beat R. Thompson, lOst. B£lb. The pair kept tho referee busy throughout, as both were inclined to use their weight instead of placing their hits.

G. Taylor, list. lpb.. boat W. Hogg. lOst. 61b. Not until the second round did the pair liven. Then Hogg scored well to the head, 100-to-toe exchanges added interest in a punishing bout in which the loser's aggression should have gained the decision.

Final.—lT. Neale, list. 41b., beat G. Taylor, list. L.lb. Frequent clinches marred this bout, in which ring ability did not worry either boxer.

LIGHT-HEAVY-WEIGHT CLASS: 12st. Semi-final.—J. II Shadbolt, list,. 91b., lie.it T._ Chandler (South Auckland heavy-weight champion), 12st. Both wore intent on hitting rather than boxing, tho winner out-hitting his opponent. Final.—R. P Cowan, list. 121b., knocked out .J, 11. Shadholt, list. 91b. Cowan, with hard rights to the jaw, finally knocked out Shadholt after putting him down for eight and four in the first round.

HEAVY-WEIGHT CLASS: Over 12st. Semi final.— C. Painter, 12st. 91b., beat A. Giftord, 12st sjlb. This opened brightly for a heavy-weight, bout, both working hard in close. Painter'? left hook connected well. Hard and brisk exchanges characterised tho second round. Gifford stopped a left to tho stomach and went down for seven, being saved by the gong. Tho final round was fought at close range, with Gifford taking heavy punishment in tho best heavy-weight bout seen in Auckland for a long time. Final —P. McCarthnv, 12st. 81b , beat C. Painter, 12st. 91b. Painter worked ?<_> tho body, hi? left scoring solidly. He forced matte)' in the socond round, but McCnrthnv replied with well-placed blows to the head.
