MR. MINNS HONOURED.

A PUBLIC FAREWELL.

FUNCTION AT NORTHCOTE.

A public farewell was tendered at Northcote last evening to Mr. P. C. Minns, one of the two Rhodes Scholars from New Zealand this year, and a presentation was made by the Mayor, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, on behalf of residents and others. The function was held in the Palais Theatre and there was a large attendance.

The Auckland University College Council was represented by the registrar, Mr. M. 11. O'Shea, the Auckland University College by Professor R. M. Algie, the University Rugby Football Club by Mr. L. E. Brooker, club captain, Mr. A. A. Bodley, chairman of committee, and Mr. W. M. Milliken, secretary; the Auckland Grammar School by Mr. 11. J. D. Mahon, headmaster, and members of the staff, and the Auckland Rugby Football Union by the chairman, Mr. 11. Frost. Members of Parliament present were Mr. A. Harris (Waitemata) and Mr. H. G. R. Mason (Auckland Suburbs). Mi-. Greenslade, who presided, read apologies for absence and messages of goodwill toward the departing scholar from the Minister of Education, the Hon. If. Atmore; the Right Hon. J. G. Coates, Leader of the Opposition; the Hon. E. W. Alison, M.L.C.; Sir George Fowlds, president of the Auckland University College Council; Mr. J. P. McPhail, Mayor of Birkenhead; Mr. A. Burns, chairman, and Mr. D. W. Dunlop, secretary, of the Auckland Education Board; and Mr. 11. S. W. King, chairman of the Seddon Memorial Technical College Council. The progress of Mr. Minns' scholastic career was traced by speakers. He gained the Junior National Scholarship as a pupil of the Northcote District School and Mr. W. J. Wernharn, principal of the Northcote Junior High School, was the first speaker. The next speaker was Mr. Mahon, who mentioned that Mr. Minns was the ninth Rhodes Scholar from tlio Auckland Grammar School. Professor Algie spoke on behalf of the Auckland University College and the Auckland University College Council, through Mr. O'Shea, conveyed congratulations to Mr. Minns and best wishes for his future success.

The Mayor handed Mr. Minns a wallet, on which was inscribed his initials in gold lettering, from the people of the district.

Mr. Minns was enthusiastically cheered on replying, the audience- singing "For lie's a Jollv Good Fellow."
