ART IN AUCKLAND.

MRS. A. F. WHYTE'S WORK.

AN EXCELLENT EXHIBITION.

A very pleasant exhibition of oil and water-colour paintings by tho well-known Auckland artist, Mrs. Alice l'\ Whyte, was opened at a private view yesterday in tho Auckland Society of Arts' rooms in tho Victoria Arcade. It is the first of many "one-man shows" which the society hopes to sponsor in future under the policy adopted sonic months ago. Mrs. Whytc's work is familiar to all who regularly visit the society's annual exhibitions. She is a tower of strength to the Auckland section. There are few to-day who so consistently interpret on paper or canvas the many moods of landscape in and about tho city. Tho present collection is made up of 47 items, and shows genuine versatility. Mrs. Whyte is not content with hills, skies and the sea; she has a fine feeling for buildings and all kinds of trees, a faculty which takes another form in her delightful watercolour flower-pieces. Probably the most interesting oil-paint-ing in tho exhibition is "Tho Old Home, Ellerslie," a really poetical study of an old white-walled cottage with trees behind and white chickens on tho grass before its door. Trees aro predominant in "Milford From Castor Bay," "The Distant Waitemata," and "Pastoral Scene, Mangerc." Among the watercolours are "Long Nose Point, Sydney Harbour," a panorama of water and shipping; "Onion Shop, Glendowie," and a couple of most interesting dull-day studies of Customs Street West on grey paper.

Tlio flower-pieces include anemones, cinerarias, roses, hydrangeas, poppies and primroses, all done with verve and charming effect. The artist has also tried her hand at two pastels, with a good measure of success.

Tho exhibition will be open from 11 a.m to 5 p.m. daily until Saturday.
