SIR ROBERT STOUT.
A UNITARIAN EULOGY.
PIONEER OF REAL RELIGION,
A tribute to the late Sir Robert Stout, from the religious point of view, was paid by the Rev. W. Jellie, in an address 111 (he Auckland Unitarian Church last evening.
Sir Robert, said Mr. Jellie, had formerly had the reputation of a sceptic, when scepticism was regarded as atheism. However, lie, Mr. Jellie, wished to claim liim as a pioneer of real religion in New Zealand.
Without taking upon himself the name of Giristian or of any other form of religion, without professing religion in any way, Sir Robert had been in tnith a follower of Christ, loyal to the great law of love to God and love to man.
The free-thought organisation which he founded in Dunedin exercised a profound influence throughout the colony. When a Unitarian/ church was established in Wellington on the basis of freedom of thought, Sir Robert became .1 member, often preached for it and in it, and of late years was its president. Sir Robert had never lost his interest in religion.
