USE OF ROAD FUNDS.
"INJUSTICE TO MOTORISTS."
SOUTH ISLAND COMPLAINT.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCII, Saturday.
" It looks as if tho South Island is going to be worse off than ever," said Mr. Hawkcs, secretary of the Canterbury Automobile Association, referring to the Highways Board's finances. " Tho Government is robbing the board of £235,000 and putting an extra threepence a gallon on tho pet. jl tax. When tho taxation of motorists was first proposed it was intended exclusively for highways, then secondary highways were added, and now it is being used to bolster up tho Consolidated Fund. It is being made a most unjust tax." Mr. Hawkes said the money made available for the improvement of backblocks roads would bo spent in the North Island. "Where are our backblocks?" he asked.
