SHARP EARTHQUAKE.
ALARM AT WESTPORT.
PEOPLE RUN INTO STREETS.
LOUD BOOM PRECEDES SHOCK.
[BY TELEGIUtII.—I'KESS ASSOCIATION.] WESTPORT. Friday. Preceded by a terrific, boom, the most severe earthquake since last Christmas was experienced at Westport.at 8.42 p.m. to-day.
People left their homes and ran into the streets, but so far as can bp. gathered no damage of eonsequenco occurred.
TREMOR LASTS ONE MINUTE.

[riY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Friday.
The secretary of the. Post and Telegraph Department at Wellington has received advice from the chief postmaster at Westport concerning the earthquake this evening. It states that the shock lasted about one minute and was preceded by a loud rumble. The tremor was felt also at Knramoa, but no damage had been reported anywhere.
EXPERIENCE AT GREYMOUTH.
NO DAMAGE REPORTED

A very sharp earthquake shock was experienced at Grevrnoiii)) at 8.40 p.m. to-day. The direction of approach was fiom tho nofth. No damage occurred but a considerable amount of alarm was caused.
