HEN AND A RAT.
DUEL TO THE DEATH
In defence of her chickens a Bull Orpington hen fought a battle to the death with a fierco sewer rat on the village green adjoining the Temperance Hall at Kilmacthomas, County Waterford, Ireland, lately.
Tho chickens wero blithely chirping and scratching for food when tho rat, darting from a sewer near tho hall, pounced on one of the brood.
Immediately the enraged lien attacked the rat, which was endeavouring to carry off its' prey, and a terrific fight ensued, tho rat squealing and biting and tho hen jumping about and pecking viciously at tho rat's eyes. Tho duel lasted for nearly an hour. Roveral times the rat was routed, but returned to the fray, which ended in its being killed. Clucking triumphantly, tho victorious lien gathered her alarmed brood, including tho chicken that was attacked, under her wings, apparently little the worse for her encounter.
