HIKURANGI'S TRIAL TRIP.

Great satisfaction was expressed when word was received that a steamer was to reopen the New Zealand Norfolk Island run. The steamer Makambo loft for Sydney on July 4, carrying numerous orders from local storekeepers to Sydney firms. Tho following morning word was received that the Hikurangi would leavo Auckland for Norfolk Island on July 11. Tho orders to Sydney worn promptly cancelled by cable and cabled to Auckland firms.

Mr. Walter Pearson died suddenly on July 8, aged 75, after a residence on tho island of over 41 years. Deceased was for sonio years storokeeping on tho island and retired from that business about ten years ago lie founded, and was conducting at tho time of his death, a penny savings bank. Peter, tho small son ot Mr. IS. \Y. Baldwin, of Hurlstouo Park, had a narrow escape from a violent death when ho stopped in front of a slowly moving motor-lorry. Ho was knocked down and sovoroly squeezed before the vehicle was Stopped, but no bones wero broken.

Tho play " My Pym Passes P.y" was staged recently by the local Operatic Society, with the assistnnco of the producer, Mr. W. Jarvis, of Sydney. There was a crowded audience.
