FOUR MEN AT BAY.

FUSILLADE OF BULLETS

Countering a fusillade of pistol bullets with his double-barrelled gun, Mr. William llolloway, garage proprietor, of Koscdale, Victoria, recently drove away four men, who, it is thought, intended to rob bis premises on the night of July 2. Mr. llolloway said that he was awakened about. 12.30 a.m. by the sound of someone tampering with the door of his garngo He got out of bed and went 'out to investigate. Four men wero standing in tlm darkness near the door of t ho garage.. They moved away when they saw him flint ho returned to the house for his gun, which he loaded. Mr. llolloway overtook the men on the road and ordered them to put their hands up. Thev moved to the opposite side of the road find approached a sedan car, which had the motor running. Mr. Hollowav. however, reached the car and lived a shot into a rear tyre, disabling it. Suddenly, three of tho men pulled out. revolvers and commenced to lire at him. He replied bv firing at the legs of one man, who ho thought was wounded. The men tired furlhei shots, none of which took effect, and when Mr. Holloway fired again they turned and fled, disappearing into the forest country. Tho cai was found to contain a complete house-breaking and safe-blowing outfit, including detonators and gelignite. The pobce think that the gang was responsible fot the scries of robberies in Victorian countrj towns lately.
