WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

BIRKDALE. Mrs. Gilpin preside;! ;it. a well attended meeting of the Birkdala Women's Institute, neld recently. Mrs. Tate, of Greenhithe, gave an address on public speaking, which she followed by elocutionary items. Miss V.~ Irwin, of Greenhithe, also gave elocutionary items. Mrs. Cain sang, and Mrs Adams quoted famous sayings. The hostesses were Mesdaines Dennen, Dickson, Gilpin and Hayrnan. An enjoyable evening was spent at Mrs. Bartlett's residence, will; tho object of raising funds to buy music for the Glee Club. Mrs. Gil] lin gave a recitation, and part singing, old English country dances, and a humorous sketch were given by members of the Institute Glee ( lub. Gramophone record, and wireless items were also much enjoyed. GLEN EDEN. A meeting of the Glen Eden Institute was held last week, Mrs. Huvton presiding. An address 011 " Buying New Zealand-made Goods " was given by Miss Ellen Melville. The speaker stressed the importance of purchasing New Zealand productions as an aid in the solution | of the unemployment problem. Some lantern slides relating to the subject were I shown. Miss Melville was accorded a ' vote of thanks for her interesting I address. Supper was served by Mesj dames Hill and Bond. GREENHITHE. 1 At- the monthly meeting of the Greeni hithe Women's Institute two plays by j Sir James Barrie were read. In the first, " Seven Women in One," the parts were ! taken by Mesdames Sexton, McCallum, j Churchhouse and Corlett. 111 the second, I " The Old Lady Shows Iler -Medals," Mesdames Newman, Hockenhull, Blakeway, Tate, Misses Crozier and Wait© took part. Mrs. Tate, who had arranged the plays, gave a short talk on the characteristics of Sir .Tarnes Barrie. Miss Crozier presided at the business section of the gathering, to which remits for tho bi-annual conference of Auckland Federated Institutes and names of delegates were submitted. Afternoon tea was served. Mrs. Arnold and Miss Waito being the hostesses. MA NAW A HE. A meeting of the Manawahe Women's Institute was held recently in the local hall, Mrs. Rendall presiding over a good attendance.' Visitors to the meeting were members of Whakatane Plunket Society, who addressed the local ladies upon the matter of forming a branch of the society in Mauawahe. It was decided to fall in with the idea and a committee was immediately formed. The visitors later were entertained at afternoon tea. A euchre party and dance was held during the week, arranged by a sub-committee, in aid of institute funds. Prizes were presented to the winners of the euchre tournament. OPOTIKI. About 60 members of the Opotiki Institute met at the Farmers' social room recently. Mrs. Main presided and extended a welcome to the visiting Woodlands members. Mrs. Main read a report 011 the group meeting at Whakatane. It was decided to hold a banquet to celebrate the. second birthday of the institute. At the conclusion of business members took charge and Mrs. Hambly presided. Matron Roberts gave a very instructive demonstration and talk on "First-aid Method?."Competitions were won by Miss Sydenham and Mrs. G. Yanstone and a chocolate dance by Mrs. McCaldon. Mrs. Scott, assisted by Miss J. Kelly, produced an amusing sketch, "Allotments." Mrs. Row« and Miss B. Kelly gave enjoyable vocal items. The hostesses were Mesdames Wingate, Wolfenden, A. Neilson, Matron Roberts and Miss Shalfoon. PAEXGARO A. Tho first, monthly meeting of the Paengaroa Institute was held recently, Mrs.J. S. Black presiding. Tho aims and objects of the institute were lucidly explained by two members of the Matata Institute,' Mrs. Withy and Mrs. Caverhill. Tho addresses were followed by a demonstration on the making of toy animals by Mrs. Caverhill. Tea was served and a programme fur next meeting was planned by the committee. Hostesses for tho afternoon were Mesdari p s \Y ilt.cn, Naylor and Black. RAGLAN. The monthly meeting of tho Raglan Women's Institute was held 011 Friday afternoon. Mrs. A. L. Pegler presided over a good attendance of members. Alter business matters had been discussed, community singing was held, Mks. - ' mour acting as piamste lea was served by Mrs. R. Cowley, Mrs. L.
