MUNICIPAL GOLF LINKS.

USE OF WAIATARUA PARK.

SUPPORT FOR PROPOSAL. REPORT TO BE OBTAINED. Leading Auckland golfers who liavo visited the Lake Waiatarua Park with the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, are confident that there is ample room to lay an 18-hole municipal golf course in (ho park without reducing the area available for cricket, football and other sports. Detailing what had been dune so far in the matter, t ho/.Mayor staled yester day that ho had made inquiries i;i order to assure himself that there was space for a- course before asking the council to consider further action. A plan had been drawn by the city engineer's department some time ago, showing a tentative layout of tho Hat ground round the lako for other sports. ll was suggested that a cricket oval could bo formed at the north-east end of the lake, three Rugby and two association football grounds at the other end, with two hockey grounds and 12 basketball courts near the oval, and 12 tennis courts, two bowling greens and two croquet lawns cast of the football grounds. This left a fairly largo area of undulating land to tho north-east for golf and a strip of land on the west below tho road running round tho area. This strip contained a number of open gullies and Mr. Baildon was informed that it was in every way suitable for uso as part of tho golf course. There would bo no risk of interfering with other sports grounds shown on the plan.

Tho next step would be to obtain a report from a golf architect upon tho layout of the proposed course. If the council decided to do this, it would bo possible later to estimate tho cost of construction and annual maintenance nnd the probable revenue. I am told that there are a great many people in Auckland who would bo very glad to make uso of municipal links," added Mr. Baildon. " There aro said to bo a large number of public golf courses near large towns in Britain. One in Waiatarua Park would bo quite conveniently close to the city and that should tend to rnako it popular." ,
