REVIEW OF THE FIELDS. BARRINGTON'S ENGAGEMENTS. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTC'HURCH, Friday. Fine weather prevailed at Waimate to-day and the going for the Hunt Club races should be good, although slightly holding. A first glance at tho Hunters' Steeplechase would suggest that Barrington reads a sound proposition, but ho also figures in tho principal cross-country event and in the Hunters' Flat Handicap. Non-patron 3 will thus bo at a disadvantage, but at tho samo time he can be recommended for whichever race he contests. In bis absence Red Heather and "West Dome may attract most attention in this event. Troilus. to bo ridden by D. O'Connor should J. T. llumphrin not be available, lias good prospect.* in the Stiulholmo Hurdles, and Lis most dangerous opponents appear to bo Camisader and Oriflamb. Several of those carded in tho Waihno Hack figure in the concluding event, and dual productions are likely. Valuator, Royal Lirr.ond and Last Mark make most appeal. Much will depend on tho fortunes of candidates in the BlueclifTs Steeplechase to give a line to investors in regard to tho field for the Hunt Cup Steeplechase. Parochial interest suggests that Barrington will bo reserved, and in that case ho will bo favourite, and there will also bo support for Rangitahi and Red Heather. Camisader and Membo aro both duo to start in tho Studholme Hurdles, and with them out of the way Fair Money and Arrowmir t-hould fight out the issue in the Morven Handicap. Presuming that Barrington has his programme completed, tho Huntern' Handicap may find West Domo and Goldtown in most demand. Town Major has a big weight in tho concluding event, but has only to put in an appearance to bo sent out a short-priced favourite. He in a doubtful starter, however, and Solmuri and Night Effort will solicit must support. SIRES OF THE SEASON. WHIRLWIND. Shortly after his importation from England in 19'.'6 Whirlwind did a. light season at the stud and his first batch of foals, now coming yearling*, all show a good deal of quality. Whirlwind will again bo at. tho srrvico of brooders in the coming r-eisnn, when ho will bo located at tho Auckland Stud Company's properly at Otahuhn. Foaled in 1921, Whirlwind is by Galloper Light (son of Sunstan from Double Back (by Bachelor's Double) and is a- commanding chestnut of splendid quality, standing IG° hands. Ho is a fine specimen of the thoroughbred horse. In tho course of a short racing career Whirlwind demonstrated that be was capable of galloping fast by winning the Piccadilly Plate, 11 miles at Ilurst Park, and it is confidently expected that he will transmit this quality to his progeny. The lines of his pedigree are very attractive. His fire. Galloper Light, son of the great sire Sunstar, was not only a good racehorse—his successes including the Grand Prix do Paris—but also has proved a successful begetter of winners since he went to tho stud in 1921. Double Back, tho darn of Whirlwind, i 3 a daughter <f Bachelor's Double, a great sue of « "V. 1 -'™' out of Will Return, a daughter oi William the Third, also a sire of stayers. William the Third, a winner of the Ascot Gold (Hip, passed ori to his progeny the stamina fur which the St. Simon strain has ever been noted. In this connection it )« interesting to note that Whirlwind claims a. strain of SI. Simon oil each sido of his ped itftee, for Santa Fina, the dam of Galloper Light, was a daughter of St. Fr.iflquin, son of St. Simon.- There la another staying strain in hia pediuree through Bachelor's Double, son of Trodennis. For yenra Tntdcnnia' lilood hits inudo a deep impression in tho stud records in Great Britain and his sons and daughters have proved remarkably successful at the stud. Whirlwind's list for the season is filling rapidly and his services are undoubtedly going to bo in keen demand GAY SHIELD. Many good horses have been bred in the Waikato, and in the past ten years the upo of imported sires has certainly hud a marked influence on tho class of horse reared m the district. In the coming season breeders wili have the privilege of patronising another imported horse in Gay Shield, who was purchased for the Dominion last year. Up to the present Gay Shield has had only limited opportunities at the stud and the oldest of his progeny are only coming yearlings. However, there are few young sires in the Dominion to-day with better credentials for stud success, than Gay Shield and he introduces a line of Hampton blood, which has been kept in tho limelight in Australia through Traquair, Flavua arid Magpie.
