FINAL MATCHES DECIDED.

KEEN CONTESTS WITNESSED.

The final matches for tlio White "ilorso Cup and tho Ladies' Provincial Cup in tho Country Week tournament of tho Auckland Hockey Association wero played yesterday afternoon at Reinuera under excellent weather conditions. Tho grounds weio in pood order, but slightly heavy. Both finals provided keen contests that wero well appreciated by tho large crowd of spectators present. Tho contestants in tho final for tho Whito Horse Cup wero Waipa and Rodney, tho former winning by four goals to one. Rodney, last year's runners-up and tho piesent holders of the Captain White Cup, has now the samo number of points as Whangarei, and a match will be played at 9 a.m. to-day between theso teams to decide the second place in tho men's tournament.

In tho ladies' competition for the Provincial Cup, Auckland B defeated Thames in tho final by four goals to three, in a match which was closo throughout. WHITE HORSE CUP. Tho results of tho preliminary games in tho round for tho Whito Ilorso Cup played yesterday are as follows:—Franklin, 2 (Doull 1, SlcNamani 1), v. Piako, 1 (Prtnvsc); Whangarei, 5 (Sloano 1, Draflin 1, Hutchin 1, Ila nail 1, Johns 1), v. Slaniapoto, 1 (Haines). Tho game between Waipa and Rodney, which proved to be the final, was marked by speed and vigour, as well as by skill and clever stick work, and there was littlo to chooso between tlu> teams during most of tho game. Waipa, however, won tho match by its fine combination in tho forward line. Right from tho opening whistle, Waipa attacked, and a combined forward movement swept down the field. Waipa was awarded a corner, from which B. Spiers sent in a fast shot which, found tho net. Rodney rallied and for a few moments Waipa's goal was in danger, but play was slowly forced back again into Rodney's territory. Tho game at this stage was open and was characterised by hard hitting and clean movements. Honours were fairly evenly divided. After some minutes of hard play, 0. Civil dashed down tho wing and centred. G. Woods secured and sent in a hard shot. With tho scoro standing at two goals against it, Rodney made a determined effort and play was kept in the Waipa circle for some time. However, no further scoro was mado before half-time. Shortly after tho recommencement of play, 0. Civil made a solo run down tho wing, was stopped bv J. Smith, but got tho ball away to B. Spiers, who goaled. Rodney was away from the resultant bully and T. Glimmer had a shot, but misjudged tho height. Waipa was forced to defend vigorously for a considerable period. Rodney was playing in tho best form it had shown and only tho excellent work of G. Jack, the Waipa goalkeeper, saved several scores. Finally J. Grimmer sent in a well-placed shot from a scrimmage in tho circle. Shortly beforo time Waipa came down (ho field in a beautifully combined movement and a melco ensued right on tho goal-line. The goalkeeper, J. \ Baves, slipped and, to tho amusement of tho spectators, half a dozen players piled on top of him. The goalkeeper was found to be lying on tho ball and from tho resultant penalty bully, B. Spiers goaled easily, making tho final score: Waipa, 4; Rodney, 1. Slessrs. L. 11. Norton and F. Nicholson were referees.

Rodney will nlav Whangarei at 9.30 a.m. to-day on ground 2 for tho Captain White Cup. Sir. R. Avery will be referee.

LADIES' PROVINCIAL CUP. A lIARD FOUGIIT MATCH. The match for the Ladies' Provincial Cup, between Auckland B and Thames, was a hard-fought contest, the result of which was uncertain right to the final whistle. No score was made for fully 20 minutes, play ranging up and down the field continuously. Auckland was fii'st to score, Miss K- Burton goaling from long range in tho circle after a well-com-bined forward rush. Shortly afterwards Miss L. Cochran broke away from confused play in midfield and, when near tho circle, passed to Miss M. Ilayes, who sent in a hard shot, tho ball goiny into the net off tho goalkeeper's pads. Iho visitors scored their first goal a few minutes later from a forward movement led by Miss D. Griffin, who sent a deep-angle pass to Miss M. Ritchie. Securing tho ball neatly, Miss Ritchie goaled. Thames continued to attack and a brilliant forward rush led F. Grubb resulted in tho ball getting past tho goalkeeper, but an offside ruling was made. No further score was made before half-time. Play was very evenly contested for the first few minutes of tho second half, but a third goal was secured for Auckland by Miss I. Hyde. A beautiful goal was made for Thames by Miss D. Griffin, who completed a combined attack. Play was very exciting from this stage to the end of the game and both teams wero at top form. Auckland's fourth goal was secured by Miss Burton and just before time Miss M. Ritchie gained Thames' third goal by a solo dash. The final score was: Auckland B, 4; Thames, 3. PRACTICE MATCH. A practice match will be played between tho Wesley Club and a team fiom the Auckland Grammar Club at Remuera at 2 p.m. to-day.
