OFFENCES BY SALESMAN. "A PRETTY SMART FELLOW" ONE MONTH'S IMPRISONMENT. Two charges of obtaining credit by fraud, and oiih of obtaining money by false representations, wort) preferred against Robert Martin Fennell, aged 32. salesman, in tho Police Court yesterday, before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. Tho total amount involved was £5 6s 3d. Accused, who was represented by Air. Ilaigh, pleaded guilty to the three charges. Chief-Detective Hammond said two months ago accused was in tho South Island, representing himself as a veterinary surgeon. Ho was called to treat a horse, and was given 17s to buy a bottle of medicine, but he did not come back. He then came to Auckland and procured four-gallon tins of disinfectant by fraud These he sold, carrying tho material round in a taxi for which ho did not pay. " He is a pretty smart fellow at getting money from people by false pretences," added tho chief detective. Mr Ilaigh said restitution would be made. Since corning to Auckland, accused had been drinking and bad committed stupid offences. On one of the fraud charges, accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, and he was convicted and discharged on the other two charges. CREDIT FOR BOARD. " TOLD A GOOD TALE." Two charges of obtaining by fraud credit lor a total amount of £lO 15s for board were admitted by Flank .lames Price, aged 38, a traveller, in the Police Court yesterday. Chief-Detective Hammond said accused evidently went to the two hotel pro prietors concerned and told them a good tale. He had not been in trouble before. Accused was remanded until Monday for sentence, pending a report from the probation officer. ALLEGATION AGAINST WOMAN. OTHER CHARGES PENDING. " There will be several similar charges against this woman," said Chief-Dotec live Hammond, in the Police Court yesterday, when Mary Hodgson was charged with obtaining £1 by falsely representing that, her bag and money had been stolen from her about July 10. Mr Hammond said accused had come from Awanui North, and had been drinking. She had obtained other sums by false pretences. Accused was remanded to appear on Tuesday.
