NOTES ON THE RACING.

QUEEN'S CHOICE IN FORM.

GOOD DAY FOR FAVOURITES.

[BY TETEGHAPH.—OWN COHEESPONDENT. ] NAPIEB, Friday.

In spita of tho fact that Llyn Dhu had not started in a hurdle race bo was made a better favourite than Lin Arlington in tho ilotoo Hack H-jrulea at Xapier to-day.

He justified the support by winning easily. Shrewd blundered and lost his rider at the second fence. Purseful. High Society, Deluge and Llj-n Dim in close order led Lin Arlington and Hasher down the back, Lin Arlington hitting a fence hard and losing a lot of ground. High Society jumped the second to last fence badly and Llyn Dhu aliot to the front. He won by four lengths from Deluge, who beat Eigh Society by three lengths. Lin Arlington, half a length back, waa fourth, and Maaher and Whakane followed at intervals. Llyn Dnu jumped very well and is a promising aspirant for hurdle racing. Lin Arlington was unlucky. Corneroff, from tho same stable no tho first winner, was elected favourite for the Pi-tana Steeplechase, although he had only his second place in an amateur flat race at Hastings as a recommendation. Wyeford, the second choice, set out at a great pace and was soon 10 lengths ahead of Eigh Heather and Hiicullua. Wyeford crashed through the wing at the second fence of the Btand double and Tinipouri and- Kovno lost their riders. Seven furlongs from home Eilcullvis was interfered with and Corneraif went up and joined Eigh Esther two fences from home, with Master Arch handy. Corneroff led over the last fence and won by two lengths from Eigh Eeather. who heat Master Arch by three lengths. Kowhatu plodded on into fourth place, with Winnogan aad Eilcuilus next. Corneroff jumped well.

Tha failures o£ Winloch at Hastings a week earlier did not deter backers and they installed her favourite for tha Meeanea Hack Hurdles. She duly won in rather pleasing stylo, while her Eastings conqueror Evenule Eero faded out rather badly in the ran home. Arrowzono jumped out first, but Blue Paper aoon ran to the front. Winloch gradually overhauled Blue Pacer in tho straight and beat her home by a length. Arrowhead was a length away third, with Arrowzono, King Mann, Keen and Evening Hero following in that order. Evening Hera can be expected to do better. Brigadier Bill's backers received a good price in a four-homo Sold in tho Ahuriri Hurdles. He was last away, but waa soon up handy to Air Force and Kalakaua, with Wliarneliife tailing off. Air Force fell at the second to last fence, leaving Brigadier Bill to win easily by ais lengths from Kalakaua. who beat Wharncliffo by four lengths. Brigadier Bill's condition stood to him. A. McDonald waa not injured when Air Force fell. Wkarncliflo'a finishing effort was striking, for in tha early part ho showed no pace. Ee should bo in tho picture at Riccarton.

There was a stirring finish for tha Stewards' Stakes. Queen's Choice. Paiko and Rory Mor going over tha line locked together, tho placings being in that order. Whakauri. on the rails, had the best of the jump out. At the turn Goblin Market just led Paiko, Queen's Choice, Rory Mor, Mountain Eeath and Moutoa Treasury. Queen's Choice and Paiko displaced Goblin Market in the run in and Rory Mor commenced to move up. A great race to the post saw Queen's Choice beat Paiko by a head, with Rory Mor half a head away third. Courageous, Goblin Market and Balloon together were next. Queen's Choicß ran one of hia improved races and waa helped by a good jump out from an inside position. Paiko also began wall, but Rory Mor had to be ridden hard in the first furlong from an outside barrier position. Better drawn at tho start, ha would have won. Courteous finished well, the track conditions being against him. Goblin Market did not run on, but Balloon finished on after not being well placed early.

Hastings form pointed strongly to Advent"s in the concluding event, yet owing to solid bucking for Lordlike and Goldlike he returned a great price. Actually, he began best from an outside barrier position. But when they settled down Royal Songster showed the way. Royal Song3ter turned into the straight ahead of Goldlike. Spearform. Tahoma, Adventus. Lordlike and Cloyne. Adventua gradually forged to the front and won by a neck from Tahoma, who beat Miralilary by half a length. Mothplana was fourth and Lordlike, Goldlike, Shortly and Clone were nest, all well up. Adventus won well at the finish and should aooii score again, Tahoma was unlucky, for he was aiow away. The betting forecasted his improvement in form rather accurately, Miralilary ran a fine race, coming from a long way back, and Mothplane also finished on. Goldlike ana Lordlike were both rather disappointing. JOCKEYS AT WAIPA. LIST OF TO-DAY'S MOUNTS. The following riding engagements have been announced for the Waipa Racing Club a meeting at Te Awamutu to-day. H. Gray.—Standfast, Flying Prince, Te Eoia and Silver Division. £. A. Hennie.—York Abbey and Land Measure. K. Dulieu.—Maahoor and Airtight. J. Burgess.—Wako King (twice). T. Williams.— Temperature. F. Foster. —Sea. Cob. E. Garrett.—Quincoma. J. Sharkey.—Mountain Guide. J. Conquest.—Wild Country. N. Syme.—Daylight. A. J. Gilmer.— Lupin Abbey.

[ R. Svme. —Luces*. H. Turner.—St. Warrigal. G. Spinks.—Ohinerauri and Master Lu. HUNTERS' STEEPLECHASE. GOOD CHANCE FOR LUCESS. When Lucess won the Hunt Club Cup and notched two seconds in hack steeplechase events at the Auckland Winter Meeting ho displayed consistently good form and appeared to be improving with ever? race In the Hunters' Steeplechase at Te Awamutu to-day he will have to meet Mashoor. Spalpiko and St, Warrigal on 7lb. 12lb and IBlb worae terms respectively, but the chances are that he will beat them again. The altered terms might enable St. Warrigal. who is susceptible to improvement, to give Lucess more trouble on this occasion but. aB Lucess gave him 221b and a decisive beating when the? ran second and third in the Tamaki Steeplechase, the task of conceding • 291b. should not be beyond the powers of Lucess. As far as Mashoor and Spalpiko are concerned they can he expected to make solid showings, and one thing that should assist Mashoor ia ilia solid fencing. Littlo can bo said in favour of any of the others, as Temperature does not stay well and York Abbey has not raced for a long time. York Abbey was a good sprinter ,i fow seasons ago and might be assisted considerably by his pace, so that, if anything outside the ''form" horses ia to win he might be the one. Aa one of R. Hannon s team. York Abbey is likely to have been well schooled and another factor in hia favour is that ho has a decided pull in the weights. However, it ia impossible to get away from the good form shown by Lucess and his chance ia sure to be highly esteemed by backers.
