NEW ZEALAND HISTORY.
PRO. CONDLIFFE'S BOOK. Tho Spectator has published a complimentary review of Professor *J. B. Condlifl'o's " New Zealand in tho Making." The writer of tho review says that Professor Condliffe's Short History of New Zealand is one of tho most useful text-books on the Dominion, but that this new work wjll havo au oven greater reputation. " Not tho least important of Professor Cotidliff's chapters,'' tho writer further says, " is that in which ho criticises education. Ho finds that the high standard of well-being is matched by a high level of instruction, but ho complains that education in the best sense of tho word is not really understood. Education there, ho says, is no mora than that kind of instruction which insists on accuracy in detail and gives its rewards to a slavish traditionalism. It does not foster the power of independent thinking or intellectual enthusiasm. This is an accusation very plainly made, which Now Zealand will havo to meet."
