MR. THOMAS. WALLACE.

MAORI WAR VETERAN.

Tho death has occurred of Mr. Thomas Wallaco, a pioneer settler, at tho ago of 85 years. He enlisted in an Imperial regiment at tho ago of 15, and went to India, later coming to New Zealand with his regiment. Ho was engaged in the Maori wars and after his discharge he joined Von Tempsky's forces and served under him in Taranaki and Waikato io pursuit of To Kooti. Ho came to tho north 47' years ago. Ho was the Grst Mangonui and Whangaroa county engineer. After leaving Mangonui, ho took 'up a farm at Mangatoetoe, near Kaitaia, and with his family lived there until tho time of his death. MR. ARTHUR WARBURTON. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Friday. The death of Mr. Arthur Warburton, an early settler and well-known business man of Wellington, occurred at his residence, The Terrace, this morning. Hp was tho founder of the firm of Arthur Warburton and Company, sharebrokers and financial agents, Featherston Street, and was in his eighty-second year. Mr. j Warburton was a son of Mr. Thomas K. Warburton, who came to Wellington with other pioneer settlers in 1841. He was educated in Wellington. In 1863 ho joined the staff of the Bank of New South Wales, with which he remained for many years, until ho founded the firm of Arthur Warburton and 'Company Mr. Warburton was a director of the Colonial Motor Company and was for many years a director of the Wellington Woollen Company and was for a period chairman and managing director of the New Zealarid' Times Newspaper Com pany. For 22 years Mr. Warburton was a member of the board of governors of the Wellington College and Girls' High School. Ho leaves a widow, three sons and a daughter, all of Wellington. The late Mr. J. K. Warburton, formerly Auditor-General, was a brother. MR. DAVID McFARLANE. The death occurred at Papakura on Thursday of Mr. David McFarlane, aged 82 years, who was for many years employed on the railways at Auckland and Newmarket. Mr. McFarlane was a native of Scotland. Ho was educated at Inverness and as a young man followed the occupation of a seaman, visiting many parts of the world Fifty-five years ago he settled in Auckland. He joined tho outsido staff of the railways soon afterward and was later promoted to a position at the Newmarket railway workshops. Except for three years spent in Australia, ho remained with the Railway Department until 20 years ago, when ho retired. He removed to Papakura and had resided there since. Mr. McFarlane married in Auckland 50 years ago in September last. He is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter. One son was killed in tho Great War. MR. R, P. BINNS. The death has occurred of Mr. Ronald Binns, of Birkenhead, aged. 46 years. He was well known 25 years ago as a representative footballer on the Ohinemuri goldfield, when he was in tho employ of tho Waihi Gold .Mining Company. A former New Zealander, Mr. Edward Howard St. George Wakefield, died at Thakcham, Sussex, on April 7. He was the eldest son of tho lato Mr. Eclward Wakefield, formerly well known, in political and journalistic circles in New Zealand, and great-nephew of Edward Gibbon Wakefield. Tho deceased was born at Tiinara in 1875, and was a pupil of Wanganui Collegiate School when he left Now Zealand in 1890. For some years lie was in South Africa, having served in the Boer War "with (he Somerset and Wiltshire Yeomanry and afterwards in the South African Constabulary. Subsequently Mr. Wakefield returned to England and was in tho headquarters in London of tho Royal Automobile Club until ho was transferred to the New York office as manager of tho touiing department of tho Automobile Club of America. In 1917 ho joined (ho Canadian Air Forco, but after an attack of rheumatic fever, which seriously impaired his health, he was given tho honourable discharge medal. His health was never fully regained and about four years ago ho retired to tho cottage in Sussex where lii> died.
