LAND FOR STREET.
OLD POST OFFICE SITE.
OFFER BEFORE CITY COUNCIL.
The terms on which the Government is prepared to sell for street purposes a portion of the old post office site in Shortland Street c4me before the City Council last evening in the form of a letter from the . Postmastfr-General, the Hon. J. B. Donald.. • - ■ The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, moved that the offer should be referred to the Finance Committee for a report. Mr. J. R. Lundon suggested that the council should consider the matter and' give some direction or suggestion to the committee. He criticised the proposal that the council should part with the vacant section at the back of the! Supreme Court for £2OOO. The town clerk, Mr. J. S. Brigham, said, speaking from memory, the Court land was valued at £26,600 at the last valuation.
The Mayor said that the points which Mr. Lundon raised were partly explained m the letter conveying the offer. The council's interests would be safeguarded. The motion was carried.
