RAILWAY REVENUE FALLS.
RETROGRESSION IN MAY. EXPENSES STILL RISING. / [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Thursday. A heavy contraction in net revenue is shown by the Railway Department's working account for the four weeks ended May 24, in comparison with the corresponding period last year. Revenue exceeded expenses by only £83,135, as against £121,746 last year. The gross revenue was £657,'491, which is £11,425 less than year. Working expenses increased by £27,186 to £574,356. i The working profit in the North Island was £30,850, a decline of £24,782, and in the South Island, £31,354, a decline of £18,313. Net revenue from miscellaneous services increased by £4484 to £20,931. For the eight weeks of the new financial year, net revenue has been £205,405, which is £23,706 less than last year. The total comprises £82,607 from the North Island railways, a reduction of £18,279; £72,366 from the South Island railways, £19,287 less than last year; and £50,432 from miscellaneous services, an increase of £13,860.
