MANGAWARA RIVER BOARD.
NO REMISSION ON LOAN. DRAINAGE AMALGAMATION. [BX TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON. Thursday. The Mangawara River Board met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. J. G. Harvey, presiding. In reporting on an interview with the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, in Wellington by himself and Mr. W. £\ Carter, Mr. A. Proctor said the Minister had stated that there was no prospect of obtaining the suggested remission of £IOOO from the £2OOO loan from the Public Works Department. With reference to the Government subsidy of £2298, which it had been stated was wrongfully expended on the Lower Mangawara works, Mr. Proctor said it was the intention of the department that the subsidy should be spent anywhere on the river. The board decided to proceed with the instructions to their solicitor to obtain legislation to validate the payment. Mr. Proctor said the Minister had giveu a favourable hearing to the board's application for grants totalling £5300 for further improvements to the river and for clearing the willows from the lower part of the stream. The board discussed the proposals for the amalgamation of drainage boards in the Waikato, which were recently considered at meetings called by? the Amalgamation Committee. Mr. J. Law moved that the Amalgamation Committee be recommended to postpone amalgamation until there hid beep included in the Taupiri Drainage and River District Act an amendment to enable the ratepayers in the proposed district to decide whether they should be rated upon the acreage basis or the capital or unimproved valuations. This was carried.
