THE COST OF EDUCATION.
Sir, —At a recent meeting of teachers there were protests against the possibility of a cut in the education vote and two members of Parliament present assured the gathering they would do all in their power to prevent it. It is difficult to understand that some people cannot grasp the fact that New Zealand, in company with the rest of the world, is going through a period of deflation of values and that no Government can prevent it. Instead of stating the cost of education, or any other public service, in pounds sterling, if we express it in, say, bales of wool, we get a clearer idea of the cost, and then decide if a reduction is justified. If wo do this with education we find the cost is nearly doubled compared with two years ago, as we are receiving about half the price for wool. It, therefore, seems obvious the community cannot support the present charge, however desirable the object may be. W.
