PRAISE FOR NEWSPAPERS.
PRESS OF THE DOMINION. LORD BLEDISLOE'S TRIBUTE, [by TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, Thursday. " New Zealand is extremely fortunate in its press," said the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, at the Young Men's Christian Association, when the anniversary of the found ng of the institution in London was celebrated. " During the last 20- years I have travelled in almost every country, and I have formed the impression that there is no more well-informed and no purer nor more enlightened press than is to be found in New Zealand. That, I hope and believe, is the case of aupply and demand. Such a press'is an enormously valuable asset to a country, and the ministers of your churches should be thankful that it is so. "As the representative of His ; Majesty in this Dominion," added His Excellency, " it is gratifying for me to be able to say that your press is pure, clean and honest, and that in showing the way to progress it is pointing upwards rather than downwards. I have a burning desire during my period of office in this country to see an advance made in all the things that the Y.M-C.A. stands for, and, as far as we can help, you. will have not only our entire sympathy but also our active support."
