NITRATE CENTENARY.
It is a hundred years since tho first exportation of. nitrate soda from Chile, tho tonnage iriyil33o amounting to about 800 tons. Tho present year also sees tho fortieth anniversary of tho establishment in Paris of the I'rench Delegation of the Nitrate Producers' Association, and appropriate celebrations of these two ovonts wero made in tho French capital during MarSh. Tho good results that followed the first attempts to use nitrate in agriculture in Europe and North America led to the despatch of experts from tho leading capitals of Europe to study the material on the spot. . Among them Darwin visited the nitrate region in 1835 and published a lengthy report on his findings. Many foreigners and Chileans have since made tho subject one o! careful study.
