BETTER ROAD ACCESS.
IMPROVEMENT IN NORTH. WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED. r bt telegraph-—otvn ror.respondent.] WHAXGABEI. Monday. Two motor-lorries requisitioned by the Public Works Department left Whangarei this morning with 50 men and their baggage en route for Matapouri; where the first relief work of the winter in this district is being commenced. It is the widening and improving of grades on the Marua-Ma lapouri Road. The work mostly comprises construction, and is therefore eminently suited for relief works. The improvement of the road will be a great boon to the settlers, who have never enjoyed proper access. In addition, it will help in the development of some fine grazing land, and should popularise several pretty bays along that sect ion of anticipated that tho work will last through the winter. Work has been authorised for 64 men. A further 20 will be engaged as soon as accommodation has been pteparco.
