ACCLIMATISATION WORK.
SOCIETY AT TE AROHA. I ALLEGED DEER MENACE. j [BT TELEGRAPH- —OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] TE AROEA, Monday. ! At the annual meeting of the To I Aroha branch of the Auckland Aoclimaj tisatioo Society the president, Mr. J. | Cochrane, reported that during the year 50 pheasants bad been liberated in the i hill countrv and 20,000 trout ova released |in the stream at \V airakau. Ihe results were generally considered disappointing. I especially with regard to the fish, which, | in his opinion, were placed in a position i entirely unstated to them. He thought a closed season for game would have a beneficial effect, i Referring to fallow deer, Mr. Cochrane ! said their fate was practically sealed. I Ihe conference at Chnstchuroh has reI solved that,: '"lt is the unanimous opinion j that the deer in New Zealand are a men- ! a ,-e to forest, farm and bird life, and steps ! must be taken to remove the menace." ! 'the responsible Cabinet Minister had | s;U( ) that the protection on deer, chamois, i wapiti and moose would bo removed, | v. i:!i the exception cf a short shooting ! season under licence to give societies an opportunity of obtaining revenue lor fur- ! tiier deer destruction. ; This, said Mr. Cochrane, was the old I parrot, cry, and if the resolution was | taken seriously deer would soon be exI i met in the Dominion. This was a great j pity as, in his opinion, the menace, whatever it micht b«». did not extend to the j Auckland province. j it was 'decided to make a request for ■ the acclimatisation of biack bass or perch j in tlio Waihou streams, j On the motion of Mr. Burrnester a committee was appointed to report on a suggestion to secede from the Auckland Society and to fc.rm a local society. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr. ,1. Cochrane; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. F. W. Wild and R. Farrow; secretary, Mr. 11. .Johnson; trea-nrer, Mr. .J. Th Rivett ; auditor. Mr. !,. Kbit; executive, Messrs. Burrnester, 1.. Klatt, V. Hamilton, R. Farrow, ,\. .Meharry and Harvey: delegates fo the parent body, the president and Mr. R. Karrow.
