TRADE OF AUSTRALIA.

CANADIAN TIMBER IMPORTS

EFFECT OF NEW TARIFF.

(Keceived Juno 22, fi.s p.m.) VANCOUVER, Juno 21

Mr. L. R. McGregor, Australian Trade Commissioner to Canada, arrived 'at Victoria, British Columbia, yesterday, and immediately began business. Ho conferred with the secretary of the provincial branch of tho Canadian Manufacturers' Association, and later visited the chairman of the Liquor Board, with a view to introducing Australian wines and distillery products.

So pleased are the British Columbia timber merchants with, the Australian extension of preference on sawn timber, that a resolution of appreciation is likely to be proposed when tho State Legislature meets.

Mr. A. E. Munn, a former member of the Stato Legislature, and now a candidate for the Canadian House of Cornmous, said it was very encouraging to see Australia following Canada in extending Empire preference. Tho fact that both British couutries were placing Canadian cedar on the same basis as California redwood was specially welcome, but an extension of tho preference on cedar was also hoped for.
