Y.W.C.A. BANQUET.

FAREWELL GATHERING,

A most enjoyable gathering took place at the Y.W.C.A. Hostel cn Saturday evening, when die matron and girls gave a farewell banquet to Miss Yuki Kimura. It was attended by members ox the advisory board, the committee, the staff ana girls of the hostel. In the lounge and dining room cheerylog fires gave warmth to the surroundings, while bowls of hydrangea, Iceland poppies and sweetpeas, which were placed around the rooms and on the supper tables, looked most attractive. Large clusters of cherry blossom artistically decorated the walls of the dining room. jlrs. J. C. Dickinson, chairwoman of the hostel committee, assisted by Miss Helen Laing, the house captain, received the guests. Sliss; Kim urn, the guest of honour, was wearing a purple kimona relieved with a grey and cherry-coloured sash.

Between the speeches songs that had been composed by Miss Stocker, the hostel secretary, and the cirls were suns. After the toast of the King, proposed by Miss Laing, had been honoured. Miss D. Andrews proposed the toast of Sliss. Kmrura. The Japanese visitor said howmuch she valued the friendship shown her in New Zealand. She explained how a delightfully informal friendship had sprung up between the Chinese Christian students and herself when they, not being able to understand the enmity between the two countries, had raised money and invited one Japanese student, whom Miss Kimura represented, to stay with them for a week. Miss Kimura stated that sbe found the people of New Zealand were very like those ox Japaiz in many ways. The latter had adopted many of the manners and customs practised in New Zealand, and the growing generation w»re now taking up all branches of sport during their school vears.

Sliss" Vera Thompson proposed the tcast of the Y.W.C.A., and Sirs. Bradsireet., president of the Y.W.C.A.. responded. In proposing the toast c-f the hostel Sliss Laing said that it owed a great deal to the Y.W.C.A. Association and the generosity of tea citizens of Auckland. In response Sirs. Dickinson said that the hostel was intended to be a home for girls away from home and the committee was proud of all its members. Sliss Brindel proposed the toast of the advisory board, to which the hostel and association were indebted in many ways, and Sir. Wiseman responded cn behalf of the board.

The toast of tie visitors was proposed by Miss Greta Fanibaun and replied to by Mr. James Fletcher. Foil owing this, the toast was proposed of Mits Maieig. who replied, welcoming the cnests and wishing Miss Begg, the general secretary, who is going to attend the Pan-Pacific Conference in Honolulu, a happy holiday.
