THE TROTTING MEETING.

■O" DAY FOR SOMBRE COLOURS. TWEED ENSEMBLES POPULAR. Grey and lowering skies, with occasional showers, had a marked sombre effect cn the frocking for the opening day of the Auckland Trotting Club's winter meeting at Alexandra Park on Saturday. Bright colours, ercept occasionally in hats or raincoats, were almost entirely absent," brown, fawn and black wre again the favourite—and for Saturday's weather—certainly the most serviceable shades. An innovation in the winter race meetings of this year were the B.ussian boots, worn by a larce number of racegoers on Saturday, which made their appearance two or three years ago and then seemed to fade into eblivicn. Whether their reappearance augurs a return to fashion it is hard to say, but they looked quite attractive when worn with a brown or black coat corresponding with their colour. Fur coats were again to be seen in fairly large numbers, but on the whole it might safely be said that tweed ensembles and raincoats predominated. Among these who were present were.—s Irs. P.
