CHURCH EDUCATION.
ST. JOHN'S COLLEGE* GRAMMAR SCHOOL' VENTURE. Some further details of the history of St. John's College and the Parnell Grammar School aro supplied by "an old boy of the Church of England Grammar School and Mr. Percival's school and formerly a scholar of St. John's College " in a letter to the Herald apropos of the article on Church Education which appeared in the Herald on Friday. " There are two points in the article in connection with which I should like to give the following additional information," he says. " After mentioning that St. John's College was removed to Parnell, where it remained until 1895, it is stated that subsequent to 1901 it was reopened at Tamaki. That is not quite correct. St. John's College was reopened at Tamaki on February 10, 1896, with seven students; but as the funds from which the warden's stipend was derived would not, at the time, allow of the appointment of a warden, the Rev. P. S. Smallfield, headmaster ot the Collegiate School, was appointed tutor. He was assisted by one of his masters, as assistant classical tutor. Eventually the Rev. Harold Anson, M.A., was appointed warden. " The Grammar School in Parnell was closed at the end of 1886, but reoponed as a private venture in 1887 under Mr. H. Percival. With this private venture was soon afterwards incorporated a private school, which had been conducted by Mr. F. J. Hazledine in the* old stone house in Hobson Bay Road, Parnell. Mr, Hazledine then joined the staff of Mr. Percival's school, which continued to be the Grammar School in name only. The Rev. P. S. Smallfield was also on the staff of this school prior to his taking charge of the late Rev. T. F. King's school at Tamaki in 1891.''
