SHOOTING TROPHIES.

COMPETITION FOR CADETS.

SUCCESS OF AUCKLANDERS.

Medallions won by Auckland cadets in the competition for tho King's trophy, presented in 1925 for competition between teams, as far as possible representative of tho full strength of the youth of Great Britain and tho Dominions, in miniature rifle shooting, were presented yesterday by Brigadier H. R. Potter,' officer commanding the Northern Military Command. Ho was accompanied by Major E. Puttick, No. 1 Regimental District Commander. Tho bronze medallions aro presented to boys who score 75 out of 100 points in the competition. The medallions bear the inscription "For special distinction. Presented by the King to encourage youth in the hopo that friendly competition and efficient training may help to forgo new links of Empire." Of tho ten medallions presented in New Zealand, all wore won by Auckland cadots, and eight of this number wcro won by cadets of the Auckland Grammar School. Tho boys to gain tho distinction thero were: J. Rumers, A. A. Duncan, E. A. H. Etheridge, J. C. Graham, E. Holmos, H. W. Larson, L. Newberry and C. R. Newton-King.

In presenting tho medallions Brigadier Potter referred to tho fact that although New Zealand was tho smallest of tho Dominions, it had contributed tho greatest number of competitors this year, 13,147. South Africa was next with 11,929 competitors, and after it camo Great Britain with 6350. Brigadier Potter complimented tho boys individually, but ho stressed tho point that although tho medallions were won as the result of individual effort, the boys were- really actuated in their endeavour by a team spirit, and the honour was not so much theirs as their school's. Ho asked the boys to treasure the medallions, and to appreciate in full Urn honour of receiving a trophy of its kind from tho King. Tho headmaster, Mr. 11. J. D. Mahon, outlined the objects of tho competition, and referred to tho lack of militaristic spirit in connection with tho competition, which helped considerably in cementing tho bonds of Empire.

Tho other two medallions wore won by cadets of St. Stephen's School, T. Tcuaua and P. .Wairua. Tho whole school was assembled for the presentation. Tho greatest distinction in tho competition lias been gained by Cadet McGeo of the 43rd Company, Parncll, who has won a silver medallion presented by tho King for cadets who have scored 100 per cent, in llio competition. This : s tho first tirno that such a medallion has been awarded in Now Zealand.
