OUTBREAKS OF FIRE.
ESCAPE BY A WINDOW
MAN AFFECTED BY SMOKE.

When escaping from a fire at a motoiv car service station in Khandallah early this morning, Mr. J. Travis, one of the proprietors, was overcome by the densa smoke and had to be carried to safety by his partner, Mr. H. B. Powell. The two men wero sleeping above thft station when fire broke out shortly after, three o'clock. Mr. Powell woke first, and the men had to break a window to escape. Mr. Travis collapsed when making his way out and Mr. Powell, although himself affected by smoke and fume% dragged him clear. Fire damaged the stock of new tyres, oil and machinery. The building ia insured in the" South British Office for £3OO, and the stock-in-trade in the Union Office for £2OO. The cause of the fire is thought to have been & short-circuit in the ignition on a motor*
OLD HOUSE DAMAGED. GOOD WORK BX BRIGADE. [BY TELEGRAPH- —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PAEROA, Friday. An old dwelling, owned by Mr. W« D. Nicholas, and occupied by Mr. H. Lyes, situated in Belmont Road, Paeroa, was partially destroyed by fire at 7.30 this evening. There was a fierce gala blowing at the time, and the Paeroa Volunteer Fire Brigade made a very smart save.
