PROTECTION OF ANIMALS.
SOCIETIES TO FEDERATE. ELECTION OF OFFICERS [by telegraph.—own correspondent.]. WELLINGTON. Friday. Tho annual conference of delegates from Societies for the Prevention of GJruelty toi* Animals was continued yesterday. Mr! G. Mitchell was in the chair. Tho following remits were carried:— That all agricultural and pastoral societies bo asked to . adopt a (jmo when cows must be milked, so as to prevent needless cruelty. That representations be again made to the proper quarter, with a view to bringing about improved conditions of transport for livestock by rail, road and steamer. That tho conference rirge upon the responsible authorities tho necessity for passing regulations making it an offence to carry dogs on tho running boards of cars, unless adequate protection is provided for them. That efforts bo made to introduce legislation to bring about standardised humane methods ,of slaughtering stock at freezing works, abattoirs and other places. That a further endeavour be made to bring about the introduction of legislation prohibiting the use of captive birds in all shooting carried on under artificial conditions.
That concerted action be taken to suppress tho use of spurs and flank ropes in buck jumping contests at shows and other places of amusement, and that .the exhibition of freak and deformed animals at such places be not allowed. Ifc was decided by seven votes to three to form a federation of tho societies. Tho Auckland, Canterbury and Hawke's Bay delegates, acting on. instructions, did not join the federation, nor did Dunedin, which was not represented. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows President, Mr. G. Mitchell; executive committee, Mrs. Christie, and Messrs. J. R. Salt and F. W. Rowley.
