BEAUTY BATHS.
SECRETS OF LONG AGO, Poppaea's beauty secret' literally fol« lowed her around wherever she went. It consisted of a herd of 600 she-asses that supplied the milk for her daily bath. This waa prepared by soaking fresh lettuce leaves in the milk overnight. History does not record whether or not the lettuce leaves were brought along, too,, but , it ,is probable that they were, for Poppaea's husband was Neroone of the most merciless,, mad tyrants of all time. If he wanted lettuce leaves for his bride, he got lettuce leaves 1 Before sho retired each night, Poppaea used a skin cream made of pea-flower, barley meal, eggs, wine lees, hartshorn, bulbs of narcissus, and honey. This was left on all night and washed off in the famous bath. It was a pretty good system, too, though a trifle arduous, for-this lady of ancient Rome was so brilliantly beautiful that the crowd cheered her when she rode by and called her a goddess.
