WAITEMATA COUNTY.
EXPENDITURE CURTAILED. An endeavour Ims been made to curtail expenditure in the Waitcmata County in terms of tho instructions issued at tlio last mooting of tho council, according to n report from tho engineer, Mr. A. Hurray, received at a meeting of tho council -yesterday. It would be another six weeks beforo tho accounts for work already committed were submitted and passed * for final payment, he said, so that the expenditure would appear to bo heavy, whereas this was not the case. Continued wot weather during the month had caused many of the roads in the county to become rapidly worn and it had been imperative to put in hand works which would otherwise have been deldyed until a later dato, move particularly on main highways in various parts of the county. Further work on these main highways was still required, but Mr. Murray said he would bo compelled to allow these roads to deteriorate further if funds were not mado available for these essential operations. The condition of the surface of the Titirangi main highway laid down aftor tho completion of tho earthworks contract was far from satisfactory owing to the continued showery weather, but every endeavour would bo made to keep the road open for tho winter. There was no doubt that tho formation work would benefit by tho pounding of this traffic over tho route.
