FIREMAN SENT TO PRISON.
TROUBLE IN RESTAURANT.;
"ASSAULT HIS LONG SUIT."
" ITo has been in overy gaol in New Zealand," said Chief-Detective Hammond iu the Polico Court yesterday, when Patrick Byrne, aged 35, fireman, was charged with being disorderly while drunk, and with assaulting two waitresses. Mr. Noble, who represented accused, entered a plea of guilty. Sub-Inspector Shanahan said accused went into a restaurant in tho city on Thursday evening, ordered a meal and then refused to pay. The manager protended to telephone for the police, but accused knocked the receiver from his hand and became abusive. He then attempted to strike tho proprietor with an iron block. Ho was put out, and in tho doorway ho struck and kicked at ona waitress and assaulted another. Mr. Noble: Drink seems to be his trouble.
The Magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt: And assault seems to be his long suit.
Accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on the first assault charge, and was convicted and discharged on tho other two counts.
