SHOWER OF BRIGHT METEORS.
Sir, —The assumption made in my letter published on tho 17th inst. that fha noises hear/1 in the Waikato on the night of tho 13th were due, not to an earthquake, but to a bright meteor, has been justified by observations already reported to inc. It appears that tho province has suffered a veritable . bombardment of bright, meteors in the past few days. One was seen at 6 p.m. on Juno 12. The next night the meteor which caused the noises was seen bv several in the Waikato and Hauraki Plains district at 6.50 p.m.; there was apparently another some littla time later that evening; one was seen ab 7.45 p.m., and another at 9.15 p.m. Finally we bave tho report published in Thursday's Hebai/d of a meteor seen in Auckland and at Koromatna at 10.5 p.m. on June 18. All these bodies were above the average in brightness and very probably were members of a common family. While thanking those of your readers who have already sent in observations of theso bodies, may I again stress the importance of securing as many reports as possible of bright meteors seen about these dates, as such showers ot bright meteors are very uncommon and of Kreat interest to astronomers. • 11.
