EARNINGS OF RAILWAYS.
FIRST RETURN OF NEW YEAR.
INCREASE -IN NET REVENUE.

A working profit of £122,270 is shown by tho Bail way Department's working accounts for tho first four weeks, ended April 26, of the now financial year. Tho corresponding period last year ga've a working profit of £107,365 and that of 1928 one of £130,221. Part of tho variation may bo attributed to tho incidence of Easter, which fell in April in 1928 and again this year, whereas last year it was at tho end of March.
Tho gross earnings wero £640,590 and tho expenses £518,320. Both aro higher than last year, the former by £22,173 and tho latter by £7279. The working profit in tho North Island was £51,758, an increase of £6,504; that in the South Island was £41,012, a reduction of £973. 'Revenue from services other than railway operating shows an excess over expenditure of £29.500, which is £9374 more than in tho corresponding period last year.
