EXPENDITURE ON STREETS.

VOTE RAISED TO £109,000.

SPECIAL WORKS IN PARKS.

On the credit side of the general account rents from city endowments were £35,379 (£55,000 estimated) ; hire of Town Hall, £4678 (£4500) ; licences, £34,506 (£33,000); fees. £5588 (£7000); bath receipts, £3565 (£3500); Zoo receipts, £6203 (£6500).

The general exepnditure on parks and reserves last year was £23,553. against an estimate of £24,600. This year's estimate, as passed, was £25.850. Special works authorised included tho erection of a dressing shed and provision of water service at Walker Road Recreation Re serve, Point Chevalier, £885; shelter shed, etc., at Waikumeto Cemetery, £535; purchase of land in Grafton Gully, £I2OO. For forming roads around tho War Memorial Museum £2IOO was voted, but £350 for planting was disallowed. A further £950 was voted for the fernery near the winter garden and £BIOO for maintenance and new works at tho Zoo, including purchase of animals. This latter vote was £BSOO last, year and £8513 was spent. Tho principal votes granted to the Works Committee were:—Streets' expenditure, net, £109,000 (£IOO,OOO voted last year and £97,279 spent); street lighting, £32,300 (£33,000 and " £32,228); street trees, £2OOO (£2OOO and £1738); public conveniences, £3BOO (£3740 and £3620).

Votes for special works in this department included New North Road widening, £IOOO (£2OOO and £864); Beach Road widening, £4500; new road to railway station, £1090; house-numbering, £750; street lighting extension, £IOOO (reduced from £2000); new conveniences, £ISOO (reduced from £2000).

A further £4OOO was allotted to the Town-planning Committee for tho pro paration of tho city map, etc., for which £3OOG was voted last year and £3366 spent.

The voto for tho Art Gallery and Old Colonists' Museum was £2650, compared with £2030 last year, when £1491 was spent. For the council's annual contribution to tho Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board £26,800 was voted and to tho Auckland Fire Board £II,OOO, both representing normal increases.

In the sanitation account a reduction of expenditure to £21.500 from £25,000 estimated last year and £22,675 spent in the collection nnd burning of refuse was adopted. A vote of £2BOO for new plant was cut down to £IBOO, roughly the sum spent last year.
