BACKING MAORI NAMES.

A TARANAKI MAN'S LUCK.

A story is being told of a Taranaki man who had a good win at Hawera last Thursday partly through a friend's forgetfulnes3. The friend wrote saying that he had a good tip for the first dav. but unfornnately had forgotten tho namo of tho horse or the race it was in. Ho remembered only that it had u Maoii namo and was a Taranaki horse. "No doubt you will bo able to find out when you ?et there," ho added. Tho Tnrnnnki man knew his friend often got hold of a good tin. and lie rlid not want to miss beinc on it. Tie decided to chance a pound on Whenuanui in tho hurdle race, and wa3 rewarded with a good dividend. In the Hack Steeplechase ho thought Waitaunaha might bo tho horso really tipped, and ho entrusted Waitaunaha with a counlo of pounds with satisfactory results. When the Flying Handicap carno up for decision he looked at his book. Te Atiawa had a Maori name and was owned in Taranaki. It might or might not have been Te Atiawa than was meant, but anyway • a pound was not rnnch to risk out of his winnings. Accordingly a pound went on To Atiawa. and ho drew tho largest dividend ol the meeting He is still in doubt as to which, if any of the three horses the tip referred to. but he feels that he has certainly got the benefit of tho doubt.
