MINISTER SEEKS CO-OPERATION

The composition wns announced to-day by tho Minister of Transport, Hon. W. A. Veitch, of the. conference he proposes to call with a view to discussing means of reducing the number of accidents duo to the heavy increase in motor traffic. The Minister is inviting to he present one representative ench of tho Health Department, the Police Department, the Education Department, the Department of Census and Statistics and the State Accident and Insurance Department; one town clerk representing tho borough councils of tho Dominion, one county council clerk representing tho county councils, a representative of tho North Island Motor Union, a representative of tho South Island Motor Union, a representative of tho insuranco " pool " formed to undertake third party insurance risks, and representatives of the Transport Department.

Mr, Veitch remarked that experience had shown quite clearly that only a small proportion of motor accidents occurring in New Zealand were railway crossing accidents. In the great bulk of them purely road traffic was concerned.

" I am..-convinced," he said, "that a great many of them can bo eliminated without any unreasonable interference with road traffic and, that being so, before taking action 1 feel I should get the advice of representatives of all tho parties concerned.

" I hope I shall have their co-opera-tion. lam particularly anxious to fulfil tho functions of a transport Minister by ensuring safety and efficiency of road traffic with as -little interference as possible. I am quite confident that with the co-opera-tion of thoso whom I &m consulting' in a representative capacity I shall succeed in bringing-about a comprehensive improvement in road traffic conditions."
