SPEEDING UP TRAFFIC.
USE FOR OLD RAIL BRIDGE
NGARUAWAHIA MAIN ROAD.
[RY TELEGRAM. —OWN COIWF.SrONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Monday.
In duo course, motorists who use the main road through Ngaruawahia will be able to avoid the delays consequent on the present road bridge being suitable only for one-way traffic. '.l he Railway Department is building a new bridge for its requirements, and the Main Highways Board has taken advantage of the opportunity to arrange to take over the old railway bridge when it becomes available. The old railway bridge will have to bo decked for road traffic, and this work will be undertaken out of main highways funds. In view of the capital cost involved, the Highways Board has secured a lease of the bridge from (ho Railway Department of sufficient, duration to justify the cost of decking The bridge will then be used for traffic in one direction, and the old road bridge will take the opposite- traffic, thus doing away with present delays -at that busy point. There is a possibility that the Railway Department in the "somewhat remote future will require the cylinders of the old bridge for widening the new railway structure, in which case it. will resume possession and another bridge will be required for road traffic.
